If someone dies at home and it is expected
You will need to contact your loved one’s usual GP to make sure that they are aware that they have died. They will complete some paperwork and send it to the medical examiner. The medical examiner will call you to go through the GPs paperwork and ask some questions. Once this has been done you will be able to book an appointment at the town hall to register the death and obtain the death certificate.
If someone dies unexpectedly
If someone dies suddenly or the death is unexplained, they will be taken into the care of the coroner. The coroner will complete their investigations and keep you updated on any findings. If the cause of death is established, the coroner will advise you when you can register and obtain the death certificate. If an inquest is opened, the coroner will provide you with an interim death certificate until the inquest has closed.
If someone dies in hospital
The bereavement office will contact you the next working day with support and further guidance. We liaise with the bereavement office to organise the necessary paperwork to bring your loved one into our care.
